EYN#063: "You're my little homunculus"

Jan 28, 2025

I've had a little ear worm running round my brain for the last few weeks.  "You're my little homunculus."

I can't get it out of my brain.  What the heck!?!

It's from the Big Bang Theory.  I`m a huge fan of the Big Bang Theory.

In this awesome scene, Leonard had just explained how he and Penny broke the bed.  Sheldon in his particularly logical investigation of the situation can't believe that a homunculus could possibly break the bed.  Penny asks "what's a homunculus?" to which Leonard replies "a small and perfectly formed human".

With a massive grin Penny tells him "aaaaawwwww, you're my little homunculus".

So why's it been running round my brain?  Well:

  • It's funny
  • It's unique
  • It's fun to say
  • It's whimsical
  • It's memorable

It's an ear worm.  It's lodged in my brain!

The Anti-Ear Worm

Are you creating anti-ear worms?   When you communicate or present something is it so dry, dull and convoluted that it's actually an anti-ear worm?  Does it create a vacuum that is instantly filled with something else?  Is there less sazzle than a grey suit, with a grey shirt and a grey tie?

How could you use your inner Big Bang brain to make things a bit lighter, funnier, and ultimately create a human connection between you and the listener?

Leave them with an ear worm that they can't get out of their brain.  A metaphor, an analogy, a joke that makes you more memorable.

Make it funny, unique, whimsical and memorable.  Put some effort into thinking how you could explain your solution, processes, proposal.  It doesn't need to be a stand-up comedy routine.

But don't create an anti-ear worm.  That's the worse thing you could do.

Hope this helps
